Honey, I Shrunk the Aristocrats
I was in the middle of changing Spunky's diaper from a Monkey Doodlez All-in-One that I am trying out, to my favourite combination - a hemp fleece prefold made by Turn a New Leaf with an Aristocrats Wool Diaper Cover.
With Snappi in hand, I asked my husband if he had seen the Aristocrats, to which he called back, "yeah, it's in the washer with the rest of the diapers." Ahhh!
My husband is wonderful, he's very helpful, he changes diapers, he is, in fact, cooking supper as we speak, but I tore off to the basement, scared of what I might find. "It's probably this big," I said, holding my fingers only centimetres apart.
"It's just a little mangled," he said, reaching the washing machine only steps ahead of me.
My heart broke when he showed me what remained of my favourite diaper cover. It was quite tightly felted, and while it might fit Spunky for one or two more weeks, it certainly will not stretch to fit a 20 lb. baby any more.
I love wool as a diaper cover. It is simply amazing. Wool can absorb up to one-third of its' weight in moisture before it begins to feel wet. Wool also maintains normal body temperature, making it a perfect option for the warmer weather ahead. Did you know that baby's diaper area in a disposable diaper can be up to 4 degrees Celcius warmer than the rest of his or her body? AND, that the increased body temperature has been linked to both the promotion of diaper rash (as a result of a warm, moist environment in which bacteria can thrive) and infertility in males.
I absolutely love my Aristocrats for overnight. Night after night, Spunky wakes up dry. Granted, I do change him through the night, but even if the Aristocrats is a bit damp, I still put it back on with the dry diaper and I've never had a problem. I'm not sure what I'll do tonight - I can get another Aristocrats, but I don't have the time to wash it, lanolize it, and have it dry before bedtime!
Wondering how to fold a prefold? My favourite fold is the bikini twist, it's so simple! Time and time again families look surprised when I show them how easy it is to turn a flat diaper or prefold into a shape that is much more recognizable to them as a diaper.Labels: diapers
