My Best Friend is in Town
My best friend, who for the last 5 years lived in Ottawa, has relocated to Atlantic Canada. When I found out they were moving back "home", I was really excited, they would be closer and easier to visit. But it turns out they moved to St. John's. So they're closer, but not at all easier to visit. She came by yesterday and had breakfast with us - Scotian made delicious waffles with whipped cream (a very good idea to marry a man who likes to cook!) BananaMuffin had been begging for waffles for days!
We chatted on the couch all morning in the way longtime friends do - it doesn't matter how much time had passed, we just pick up where we left off. At the same time, you realize how much you've missed each other. She doesn't have children yet, but since many of our friends do, and they have a full itinerary of visitors lined up this Summer, she is working on putting together a box of toys appropriate for a wide range of ages. One of the toys she selected was a picnic set by Lilly Bean Play Food. This set in particular is wonderful because it is soft (no injuries from hard toys), it is made of tactile felt with lots of hand stitching, and the basket is perfect for in/out play that older babies (9 months onward or so) love so much. I also promised to make her a Waldorf doll - an organic doll project shown in one of my favourite books - Nature Babies by Tara John Manning. I've been collecting organic cotton jersey that I ordered from Organic Cotton Plus, hemp fleece from Efforts, and wool batting from Lismore Sheep Farm located in River John, NS. I've got the bodies cut out (I'm trying to make a few, for friends who are expecting soon or have had new babies recently), and it won't be any problem to sew them, but the heads are incredibly tricky, and since I have my hands full with two little ones, I haven't had the time (yet) to properly devote to them.
All in all, I wish we had more time together, she was wonderful with BananaMuffin and smitten over Spunky, but there was still so much more chatting to do. Such is life, I suppose, no matter how much time you have, there is still catching up to do and fun to have together. Not that I'm complaining, I'm always happy to see my best friend, but now I'm contemplating a trip to St. John's this summer - I'm dying to see the icebergs in St. John's Harbour and spend more time with my best friend! And when I go, BananaMuffin, Spunky and an organic cuddle doll stuffed with wool (or two or three) will be travelling with me!Labels: Playtime
