A Day in the Valley

For the second weekend in a row, we woke up to fog and drizzle along the coast with a promise of sun and a beautiful day everywhere else in the province. Anticipating this, we had planned to take a little day trip to the Annapolis Valley, far enough inland to generally be sunny and warm. A friend of mine has parents who now live in Port Williams, so she passed along a list of interesting things to do...so we did!

We arrived in Wolfville via the Gaspereau Valley, where Scotian was showing us the bike route for the MS Bike Tour he participates in annually with a team from work. I can see why he's in training! There are some serious hills to be conquered! We decided to visit the Wolfville Farmers' Market where we met the most interesting breeds of dogs and some fabulous exhibitors! We picked up some farm-fresh asparagus, a baguette, some Cranberry Cheddar cheese from Fox Hill Cheese House, and I spoke to a lovely lady named Angela Melanson who is a fibre artist and the talent behind Lala and Gleen. She had the most incredibly beautiful tea cozies I have ever seen along with wool bags made from recycled sweaters! Two of my favourite things: wool and bags. Now, I'm also partial to tea, so the tea cozies were a big hit too, I'm thinking ahead to Christmas gifts...I was so impressed with her work, I sent off an email to the wonderful lady behind Sugardaddy Shop whom I have "met" though another friend, Michelle Kempton. Sugardaddy Shop carries a variety of jewelery and accessories by Canadian Designers and I'm sure she will love Angela's work!

By this time, Spunky needed a diaper change so I changed him in the grass while he played with the "paintbrushes" - flowers similar to a dandelion. My mom always called them "yellow paintbrushes" when we were growing up, so that's what I still call them. Scotian and BananaMuffin went off in search of a GeoCache that was supposedly hidden somewhere within the market. They didn't find it - too many "muggles" to bust them, Scotian said.

We went off in search of lunch, on the way, we popped in to Harvest Gallery where I purchased a beautiful felted MacIntosh apple made by Pia Skaarer-Nielsen of Wonderous Woolerie. I was quite tickled. I'm not entirely sure what I'll do with my apple beyond admiring it, but it was a bit irresistible!

After lunch, our travels took us to Port Williams, stopping to find a second GeoCache along the way (we were successful in finding it this time!) We stopped in at Fox Hill Cheese House where we petted the resident kitty and got some Gelato to enjoy. We completed a third GeoCache and started to work our way home, slowly. BananaMuffin was starting to get a little beside herself, so we stopped at a little park in Port Williams on the corner of Church Street and the main road - which is, I learned, the site of the former Port Willams School No. 61. It was a nice little park with picnic tables and a majestic tree canopy, so we enjoyed some cheese and baguette while Scotian searched, unsuccessfully, for another GeoCache hidden in the park.

Feeling much better again, we made our way back through the Gaspereau Valley, making one last stop for mom at Gaspereau Valley Fibres, which is a farm and wool shop. BananaMuffin had a BLAST chasing the chickens around the yard while I picked up some felting needles and 130 g of dyed wool locks in the most beautiful range of colours. I was very satisfied with my day!

We arrived back home at about 6 pm and put some salmon on the BBQ, which we enjoyed with the asparagus we picked up at the market that morning. It was one of the most enjoyable days we've had as a family in recent memory. We each had time to do the things we enjoy, and we spent some wonderful quality time together - something that was long overdue!

Thanks guys, I love you :)
