Egg Carton Nature Souvenirs
A fantastic family craft, Linda writes: "Before our holiday, my daughter (age 5 1/2) and I painted egg cartons - one colour per egg cup. Then while hiking in Kejimkujik National Park, we tried to find natural things that matched the colours of each section. The rule was: we could take a small piece of something that was plentiful, i.e. leaves; but something there was only one of, or whose collection was prohibited, we’d take a photo instead. It was interesting to collect specimens with a 5 year old, as I had not taken into account her perfectionism - Keji is full of beautiful hemlock cones but none of them were designed by nature to fit into an egg carton. It got a little tense while [my little girl] tried to find a fitting cone but finally she did manage to locate a smaller one without a total meltdown. The only other issue we had on that hike was [my little girl] suddenly stopping in mid-trail and fussing over her hair and ball cap - apparently it's "fashionable" to wear the cap backwards and with lots of your hair falling right over your face. We had fun with some items, such as multi-coloured leaves, trying to decide which painted section it best matched. We looked a little more closely at the natural things around us, and marveled at the complex colours. The only thing we needed to photograph was a beautiful orange mushroom growing all alone, and I'll probably never get the photo printed, though you could if you were a keener. Most of the items we chose will soon wilt and be composted, though the hemlock cones we'll keep of course! For an older child, you could try writing descriptions in the egg cups, e.g. rough, smooth, circular, etc.
I found this craft idea in Family Fun Magazine, which you shouldn't scorn just because it is published by Disney. They have great ideas in each issue, including lots of active and non-competitive games."Labels: Playtime
