Bean Bags
One of the most popular toys in our household are a set of bean bags I made from left over quilting cotton. Both Spunky and BananaMuffin love them - for wildly different reasons. Spunky loves to mouth them, clutching them between his still wildly grasping hands, and BananaMuffin is just learning the physics of trajectory motion (this is my engineering degree talking), which, in plain English, means she's learning to throw things. I don't mind her tossing the bean bags in the house. She balances them on her head, we play games of catch, and because I've stuffed them with organic herbs, everywhere they go, their scent lingers.
I made a set of 6 - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. BananaMuffin is also learning her colours and loves to arrange them and call out the names of the colours.
Here are the instructions to make your own bean bags:
- Cut 2 5" squares of the fabric of your choice.
- With right sides together and pinned, sew three of four sides completely, sew the fourth side, leaving an opening for stuffing the bean bag.
- Mix 10 tbsp. organic flax seeds with 2 tbsp. organic lavender, mint or chamomile.
- Add 5 heaping tablespoons of the mixture to each bean bag.
- Carefully sew the opening closed by topstitching close to the seam.
- Take a BIG sniff and enjoy!
Tips: By using flax seeds, you can gently warm these bean bags in the microwave or cool them in the fridge for soothing boo boos! If you live in the Halifax area, organic chamomile, lavender, and mint (as well as flax seeds, of course), can be purchased at Planet Organic on Quinpool Road. For true BEAN bags, substitute your favourite dried bean for the flax seeds.Labels: Playtime
