Time and Memories

Have you ever been to a craft show or artisan fair and have completely fallen in love with something you saw - so much so that you can't get it out of your mind and you HAVE to find a way to have it for your very own? This was the case the day the Ogunquit Wooden Rattles arrived at my door. These rattles are so exquisitely crafted, and when I opened the box, the sweet smell of beeswax polish filled the air. I actually took each one out of the box and smelled it!

Each wooden baby rattle is crafted with love and care by renowned Maine toy artist William John Woods in Ogunquit, Maine.

Each heirloom quality rattle is intricately crafted of multiple layers of different coloured woods to create these strikingly beautiful keepsakes. No dyes or stains are used. Looking at these rattles, you cannot see seams between the different types of wood, so honestly, had I not known that these were wood inlays, I would have assumed they were stained! Each wooden baby rattle is crafted by hand and rubbed with natural walnut oil and beeswax to bring out the wonderfully warm colors of the maples, cherry and walnut and the plantation-grown redheart, purpleheart and cocobolo.

I've picked one out for Spunky - it is maple and walnut and reminds me of the earthy colours of female Pintail ducks that were quite common in the Sackville Waterfowl Park, where I grew up. How a wooden rattle can evoke such memories is beyond me, but sometimes nature speaks louder than words!
