Blockhouse

Last Saturday, Scotian, the kids and I, along with our friend Jenny-Junebug and her little guy Chi-Chi took a little drive to the South Shore Waldorf School in Blockhouse to attend their Christmas Fair. When we left Dartmouth, it was cold, crisp, and there were flurries in the air, adding to the festive feeling of the day. We arrived in Blockhouse about an hour later, and were greeted with a full house!

The school itself appears to be a converted school house, a new, sprawling school having been built across the street. Full of old-fashioned charm, creaking wooden stairs and green plywood chalk boards, Blockhouse Waldorf School just makes you feel at home. The entire building has a homey feel - warm colours painted on the walls, works of art created by the children hanging proudly. Somehow, you just feel as though you could curl up around a wood stove and enjoy the snow falling outside. Home cooked food was served for lunch: delicious lasagna, baguettes, green salad, pastas, and samosas to keep us satisfied for the afternoon.

There was a silent auction of handmade treasures, and a craft sale of interesting handmade toys: we picked up a fantastic carved rabbit pull toy for Spunky and BananaMuffin, and I purchased a drop needle for myself (I WILL find time to learn to use it!) and Jenny-Junebug found some lovely hand cut wooden trees to add to Chi-Chi and Muffy's play set.

Just as the kids were losing patience with the adult portion of the day, Wally the dancing elf arrived to entertain. Chi-Chi enjoyed watching him dance, but BananaMuffin preferred to watch from afar, proclaiming him as "scary".

We meandered all the way home, visiting Mahone Bay and their Father Christmas Festival, successfully completed three Geocaches (BananaMuffin found her first one - she spotted it before Scotian did!) on the way, and a lovely day was had by all. Just a nice time out with the family, and a great way to kick off the holiday season!

The Blockhouse Waldorf School Christmas fair will definitely be on our itinerary next year!
