I Caved
So I caved and ordered myself a custom Jen Ham bag. I have been through a LOT of bags in my life - I love purses of all descriptions, and, now that I'm "older", I know what I need and what I want and what I like. I like purses that I can wear across my chest like a satchel, like I did when I was a young hooligan in high school. I had a rucksack from Canadian Tire that I kept all of my "brooding teenager" gear in, like my notebook, my enormous 1970s manual-focus Pentax camera - bought second hand, my wallet stuffed full of photos of my friends from approximately second grade onward (and very little money), pins from all the indie bands we used to go see (Monoxides, Eric's Trip, Bad Luck 13, His Luscious Uncle, Sloan...anyone who recognizes these names will know exactly where I grew up and my "vintage"), pens, gum, random collectibles that could be arranged on a diner table at Mel's, drinking cup after cup of hot chocolate in their 1950s mugs, waiting for the theatre to let out and for Nat to get off work.
I have also finally found my "style". For a while I tried to decorate according to magazines, tried to colour co-ordinate the way a young professional should. And it backfired. I simply cannot live with beige. I can't. For my wedding, my girlfriends wore dresses of the colour of their choosing, and I wore accessories of my favourite colour combination: pink and green. I have finally given in and purchased a multi-coloured rug that is meant for a children's room, but I love it so much, I don't mind that it's not "sophisticated". That's just my style. I like things with character.
I also love flowers. Lilies in particular. So, when I was introduced to the work of Jen Ham through a customer, I decided to take the plunge. I ordered a green and pink bag with lilies and a 45" long strap. Everything else was left up to her. And I have to say, I gasped in delight when she sent me photos, just this evening.
I'm hoping, now that I'm of "certain age", that I have a good grasp on what I want, and what I need. It makes me happy to have supported such a talented craftswoman. I can't wait to take my bag out on the town. Maybe to an indie rock show...though I suspect I have no idea where to find one these days. More likely to a playgroup ;) That's life, and I'm comfortable with it!
