Isa Mundo - One World

The following email arrived in my inbox last week. I receive a lot of email, and it is easy to overlook notes like these, but there was something about this story that touched me...perhaps that every child, regardless of where they are born, deserves a beginning full of possibilities, or that we simply do not understand what it is like to have to do without absolute basic items...

"Hello,
We are a small non for profit organization called Isa Mundo Foundation - based in Ottawa ON. Please visit our website at - www.isamundo.org.

We are interested in forming a partnership with Nurtured because of our work with orphanages. But more importantly, one of our project site visits in Lake Chapala Mexico near Guadalajara, exposed us to the work that a group of women in the region are doing to help new born children in Guadalajara.

Due to poverty, unemployment and lack of health coverage, most women give birth in hospitals without having anything for their newborn babies - we were told that some babies were sent home wrapped in papers. This group of women have started putting together a care package for these babies which include a blanket, cloth diapers, a sleeper, hat and socks for the baby. They also include panties and socks for the moms because upon admission a family member must take home all the patient’s belongings as there are no lockers available for storage. We see mothers walking the corridors barefoot in nothing more than a hospital gown.

Before our visit, we offered to bring them something to help them out. Of all things they requested, they specifically wanted plastic covered diaper pins, which they told us were rare to get in the area. So we brought as many of them as possible, most made by Gerber. We have since written to Gerber to ask for their help in providing diaper pins but they turned us down. So we are now targeting businesses that might be able to help.

The group is putting together as many packages as it can but there are over 60 births in this one hospital per day, so it is overwhelming. The best we can do is provide these diaper pins that are so needed there.

We are looking for donations or maybe discount on this diaper pins. We will send them the pins twice a year - maybe 100 pins at a time.

We are asking for your support and we would like to form a partnership with your company in order to help these newborns - it is sad to know that even the simplest things they cannot have upon their birth. If you need more information on the group doing this work and the work of the Isa Mundo Foundation - please let us know and we will provide them for you.

I look forward to your response and thank you very much.

Upon receiving his email, I immediately sent a reply that Nurtured would be happy to help. I'm pleased to say that 36 packages of Dritz diaper pins will be en route to Mexico very soon. Over time, we hope to also provide prefold diapers and covers for these newborns. It's the least we can do.
