The Wool Affliction
The wool affliction continues! We made a trip back to the Annapolis Valley two weekends ago under the guise of attending a native plant sale at Acadia University (which we did, and at which I acquired a beautiful winterberry plant and a Virginia creeper for my "backyard conversion" - more on that coming soon). After a lovely lunch at my favourite little "tucked away" spot, ArtCan in Canning, we started to make our way home, with our requisite trip to Gaspereaux Valley Fibres yarn shop. I love everything about this shop - the fact that it is located on a working farm, complete with Willie the sheep and Caprice the llama, that the shop itself is nestled cozily in a converted barn heated by the sun and a wood stove, the smell of the wool and yarn as soon as you walk through the door, the beautiful colours surrounding you, and the friendly ladies working and knitting there. It's one of my favourite places, despite the fact that I do not knit! I did purchase two skeins of "Peru", an undyed wool/silk blend that Jenny Junebug and I will dye on our next "craft night", and I will commission my mom, expert knitter that she is, to knit me a new cardigan. I am very excited about this prospect - especially since I'm also afflicted with cold arms!
BananaMuffin and Spunky both enjoyed the farm as well, and the kind owner of the property gave us a personal tour of the barns, complete with two brand new black baby lambs, only a few hours old. It was wonderful to see the mama nursing her babies, and it gave me a new perspective on breastfeeding - sheep can only nurse their young standing up! I am very thankful to be able to do it lying down! The tired mama was doing her best, standing for short periods while her babies nursed happily.
BananaMuffin was also particularly taken with the chickens and roosters, and I fell in love with Caprice, the llama. It was wonderful to have the kids connect with nature, even for a short period. It was an enjoyable family day soon to be repeated, I'm sure - the wool affliction does not seem to be subsiding!Labels: travel
