Nurtured Products for Parenting is nominated for the prestigious SavvyMom Mom Entrepreneur of the Year award, and we need your votes to help us win.
Halifax, Nova Scotia, June 23, 2008 - On the anniversary of the birth of our first child, Nurtured has put our name into the ring to win The SavvyMom Mom Entrepreneur of the Year Award, a readers' choice contest designed to find Canada's top Mom Entrepreneur. The winner will be announced in the fall, and will be rewarded with a $17,000 prize that was designed to help take that business to the next level.
Nurtured began in 2006 in response to the need in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the Maritimes for a comprehensive resource for environmentally friendly products for babies, children and families including cloth diapers, baby carriers and natural toys. Furthermore, we strive to create a community of resources, helping new moms connect with other moms and find the products and services they need. Customer service is our number one focus.
The founder, April MacKinnon, experienced a premature birth of her first child, the complications surrounding which left her feeling isolated, yet determined to create a better future for her daughter. Feeling profoundly changed by the experience of motherhood, she drew on the environmental principles of her previous career as a civil engineer and set out to share her experience and help expectant moms find the resources they need and products they want to provide a healthy environment for their babies. In April 2006, Nurtured was born. Twenty-one months later, the MacKinnons also welcomed a son into their family, following the practices of cloth diapering, babywearing and attachment parenting.
Nurtured launched as an online store in August 2006 and quickly became a "hybrid" home-based shop, catering mainly to local customers from the Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and Sackville, Nova Scotia areas. In 2007, Nurtured also provided local delivery to our customers in the Moncton, New Brunswick area and expanded our mail order department to encompass approximately 10% of total sales. As of June 2008, we have already exceeded sales for 2007 with big expansion plans in the coming months!
Nurtured is excited to be part of the Halifax birth community. We consider ourselves to be as much as resource as a retail location. The grand prize would mean our plans to be part of the Halifax business community would be realized. With a staffed retail location, we can provide ongoing customer support, workshops, space to interview birth support providers including doulas, playgroups, craft classes, and the list goes on. Our ideas are limited only by our resources! We could also provide our mail order customers with a full-colour catalogue for convenient shopping and improve the efficiency of our systems to help eliminate inventory inaccuracies.
