Double Happiness
Tonight, on a warm, sunny July evening, the kids and I strolled up half a block to our neighbour Trudi's house for a cup of tea. Trudi is the proprietor of Double Happiness Designs, and she creates beautiful, precision cut one-of-a-kind books, albums and artwork from gorgeous Japanese papers. I have to admit, I had studio envy looking around at all the beautiful Japanese papers she had hanging neatly on the wall, and the industrial-sized paper cutter ready to cut with amazing accuracy!
Trudi's work was recently featured in Canadian Living Magazine, and we chatted over email after I sent her a congratulatory note about the national coverage she had received. She mentioned in passing that she was quite taken with our selection of Lilly Bean Play Food. So, I packed up a perfect Japanese selection of pear, radish, and strawberry for inspiration in her colourful studio full of tiny little curiosities. In turn, she generously gave me two of her Sakura bird prints, which I will be framing and hanging very soon in our hallway, replacing some of my black and white photographs. She also passed along some samples of Japanese fabrics - I can't wait to turn them into bits of clothing for "the dolls".
We enjoyed a cup of Jasmine tea and sat on the veranda chatting while the kids played with Trudi's poodle, Milo. It's amazing the talent you'll find in your neighbourhood, if you just look around the corner!
