Buttons, Buttons, Who's Got the Buttons?

Near Scotian's parents cottage, there is a great little thrift shop named Monty's that I love to scour for treasures. It's full of great clothes, dishes, trinkets, vintage toys and is a great undiscovered wonders. I have a list of favourite junk, thrift and salvage shops throughout Atlantic Canada - some of the best have been found quite by accident, like the "antiques" shop in a converted church in Portugal Cove, Newfoundland that we discovered when BananaMuffin was only a year old and we were waiting for the Bell Island Ferry (if only we weren't coming home by plane, I would have bought many, many things!), or the "uniquities" shop on Main Street in Canning, Nova Scotia where I found a great vintage children's chair, a potato masher that actually works (a long, long story about my plastic potato masher and my mother's frustration at trying to make a decent pot of mashed potatoes), and a Fire King measuring cup for my mom to replace the one my dad accidentally broke.

Monty's was discovered by my equally thrifty mother-in-law, in her quest for hooking wool for her rugs. And, to my delight, Monty's scours their clothing for buttons. Yes, buttons. I LOVE vintage buttons. Well, I love most things vintage, but I found some great buttons - some are wood, some are plastic (and possibly Bakelite), one is even copper or silver. They are colourful, fun, and will make great embellishments for the "Pleated Bags" from Amy Karol's Bend the Rules Sewing that I have in mind as Christmas gifts (hopefully the intended recipients don't read this blog!)

Is it crazy to spend 45 minutes rooting through a bin of buttons? My particular favourite is a wooden button with the letter "R" printed in the center. To me, it looks like an old-fashioned typewriter key, and I hope to use it as a sweater button on a doll named Rory.

I'll just have to wait for inspiration to come on the rest. In the meantime, I'll keep my eyes peeled for cute, interesting buttons waiting to be rescued!
