Play Silks Have Arrived!

The postman delivered a beautifully rainbow coloured gift this morning - our play silks finally arrived! I literally could not wait to see them and tore open the box in my kitchen where I oohed and ahhed over the bright, beautiful colours. Each set of 3 is available in elemental brights (red - super hero cape, green - grass, and blue - sky) and a dreamy set of turquoise blue, green, and yellow. Each play silk is 36 inches square, and is perfect for babies, toddlers and preschoolers of any age. Whether or not you follow a Waldorf or Montessori program, you'll find a thousand and one uses for your play silks!
Our play silks are hand-dyed by a mom in Ontario using food-grade colours. No acid dyes are used.
In our household, and the households of our friends whose kids also have play silks, they absolutely get used EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. Here are some suggestions:
Newborns: drape a play silk over a bassinet, car seat, hammock or swing (being sure to allow adequate air circulation) to gently and softly filter the light.
Babies: Let them touch, feel, play with the silks. Hold one end and gently blow to make it flutter and tickle their face. Watch the giggles ensue!
Crawlers: Hang the play silks from a clothesline. Spunky loves to crawl through the silks feeling the breeze and the silk on his face. Weaving in and out, in and out.
Toddlers: Wear the silks as capes (fasten at neck with a clothespin or other item that will come undone easily. Do not knot around your toddler's neck!), dresses, use as streamers, cover a box to use as a playhouse. Dolls also love to be put to bed with play silk covers!
Preschoolers: This is one of our FAVOURITE activies - I divide half of our playroom with the clothesline. On one side, I pile pillows, duvets, quilts, blankets, whatever I can find. This creates a little "play fort" for the kids. They both love rolling around on the soft blankets and feeling like they're in their own little world!
Mom: wear it out as an accessory - why not? Our grandmothers did!
