Photo Housekeeping...
I've been trying to organize our digital photos, which has proved to be a larger task than I thought. We have taken so many photos of our Bunny, I find the task a bit daunting. But, she turns one next month, and I've promised myself that I would have them organized by then, so I am trying. I also told myself I would lose all the baby weight by her birthday...that hasn't happened either. I really thought that the last few pounds would disappear once she was weaned, but it's been a few weeks now, and nothing is budging. Oh well, I will be happy enough if I can be active for the winter, and accept that some extra weight might be mine...all for the price of one great baby. I can cope with that. But I digress. I wanted to write about my photos.
So, through the photo sorting process, I found a bunch of pictures I'd forgotten about, and it made me think about the love I have for baby carriers. My love affair began when I was 14 years old. My mother took me, my brother (13), and my sister (15) to Thailand for a month to trek in the mountains and live with remote hill tribe families. The women in these remote villages carried their babies 24/7, and I clung to these women, offering to take a baby for a few hours. I can remember hiking for hours, with these sweet babies tied to my back, their breath against my shoulders. Pure heaven. I also remember these babies hardly cried, and having babysat many North American babies, this made quite an impression on me.
When I brought my 5 pound bunny home from the hospital, after 3 weeks in an incubator, I wanted to carry her all the time. I contacted April, and she helped me decide that a BabyHawk would work best for us. I was thrilled to keep her close to me, and would carry her everywhere. I also discovered after watching Tummy 2 Tummy, that I could wear my 5 pound preemie on my back in the Baby Hawk. This made me really excited, and after some practice on the couch, I started to carry her pretty well exclusively on my back. The attached photo shows us last winter, when she was a few month old, snug as a bug, riding high up. I used to (and still do) carry a small mirror so I can check on her. The technique for putting a small baby on your back is different than for larger babies, and takes some practice, but it's so worth it if you're an avid babywearer.
Despite my adoration for my BabyHawk, I was also curious about slings. By this time, I owned a copy of Tummy 2 Tummy, and I really wanted to try a sling. We were also going traveling with her, and I wanted something really easy to nurse in, as we both preferred nursing in the horizontal position (her lying horizontally across my chest). So, I bought a Maya Wrap Ring Sling. I used the sling so much that trip, we were on the go a lot, and she would fall asleep nursing in the sling, and I would just leave her there, while we went about our day. I also figured out how to carry her upright, and lying down, on my back, in the sling. More baby wearing fun! The summer beach shot is at Stanley Park, when the sling was converted to shade, and the Bum Bum balm a toy. I took that photo for April, but she's never seen it until now!
You would think I had had enough of baby carriers at this point, right? My husband certainly hoped so. Not exactly. Something in my collection was missing. I wanted an Ergo. I was so happy with the BabyHawk and Ring Sling, why did I need more? Maybe the same reason I couldn't buy just one kind of diaper, I had to have a mix of 24 diapers. (I have prefolds, Sugar Peas, Monkey Doodlez, Fuzzi Bunz, bumGenius, and many covers). Anyway, this fall I started to work for Nurtured, and when the Beco Butterfly baby carriers came in, I lost it. I caved, and I bought one. And I love it too. And my husband actually uses it. The photo is of my best friend/potential sister in law, wearing bunny a couple weekends ago. Bunny is, of course, wearing her Aristrocrats Longies and Padraigs. By the way, I have been using my Longies as diapers covers/pants, but also over my pocket diapers. They are so warm, they just make a great wool pant for the winter.
My babywearing collection is now complete. Although I do spend too much time (when I should be working) ogling the Minkee lined BabyHawks, the new Beco Butterfly IIs that just arrived...I do love helping other people pick baby carriers!
On another note, April and her family came by our place this weekend for a cup of tea, and to scope out some old beams that we may or may not have. While they were here, BananaMuffin and I decided to dig up my parsnips - of which there are a whopping 4. Well, I was disappointed that more parsnips didn't germinate, but I wasn't disappointed with their size. They are huge! I couldn't believe it. Unfortunately, 20 minutes after digging them up, my husband found one of my dogs devouring them. Oops! A photo of the parsnip is to follow.
Enjoy the fall, dress warm, and get out the door for a walk with your favorite baby carrier. Thanks for reading...Labels: baby carriers, BabyHawk, cloth diapers, Ergo
