A Profound Interview
Our local CBC Afternoon show, Mainstreet, aired a profound, thought provoking interview with Anti-Nuclear activist, Helen Caldicott. I've downloaded it and listened to it several times, in succession. Her words are frightening, and in her discussion of nuclear armament, the Cold War, to reaching peak oil, phthalates, BPA and the future of our earth and our children, it leaves me with the impression that we either are not being adequately represented, or we have become a little too complacent. In summing up, her words left me thinking:
"Everyone listening to this program needs to enter a period of discomfort...use your democracy, it's an incredibly privilege to live in a democracy. DO NOT RE-ELECT THAT AWFUL MAN, but more than that, it's not the politicians who are going to fix it, they are your representatives, you are their leaders. That means, if you want your children to have a future, and we stop global warming, and we abolish nuclear weapons - and Canada has a huge role to play in that because you're part of NATO, you're part of NORAD - and you have nuclear weapons in your harbour most of the time, even after you had that terrible accident in 1917 - coming from France, from England, and America - Ban them. I mean, you can easily do that, become a prototype for the rest of Canada. You've got an enormous amount of work to do. And by God, one person can do that if they decide." - Helen Caldicott
I started Nurtured with a desire to change the world for the better, to use what knowledge I have of the environment and my background as a civil/environmental engineer to make a difference. It was when BananaMuffin was born, premature, ill, and in an isolation room at our local Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that I felt compelled to act in any way I could to be sure this little child had a bright future and a safe world to grow up in. Listening to Helen Coldicott scares me, but more than that, angers me that our leaders have left us in this position: if the corporations knew that BPA and pthalates were dangerous, why isn't the government protecting us? If the our environment is hanging in the balance, why aren't we doing more?
