A Wonderful Weekend
Sometimes, you have those weekends that fly by, full of errands, leaving you more exhausted than when you "ended" the week on Friday. This past weekend, though it was full, was incredibly happy, relaxed, and full of wonderful late-fall outdoor activities. Friday, Scotian left work early and we drove to my parents house in Sackville, New Brunswick. We left the kids happy and in the capable hands of my mom while Scotian and I enjoyed a rare but welcomed "night on the town". Now, in a small university town, there's often not a lot to do, but on this occasion, we had tickets to a songwriter's circle at the Sackville United Church hosted by Bruce Guthro and featuring Atlantic Canada songwriters Jill Barber, Catherine MacLellan, and Meghan Smith. With the acoutics of a 19th century church, and low-level stage lighting that resembled flickering candle light, we were transported back to the time of the radio, sitting in a church pew with hundreds of students, senior citizens and everyone in between, enjoying a really wonderful evening of beautiful song and a few laughs as well. It was a wonderful night. We left the church taking in the crisp fall air and noticed that the stars were particularly brilliant. There's something about a small town to make you slow down and enjoy the little things.
Saturday morning I spent with a lovely expectant couple, the father and I attended school together once upon a time. They were interested in learning more about cloth diapers and baby carriers, so we spent some time over a cup of tea next to their wood stove, chatting about all the things they would want to consider for their newborn. It was warm and inviting and and a great way to spend the morning.
The afternoon was filled with fun as my sister and my niece arrived. It's always so nice to see Spunky and BananaMuffin playing with their cousin - I remember distinctly always ending up in a fight with my cousins, so it's good to see harmony between family members once in a while :) I tend to be prone to spontaneous activities, so in a desire to get out and enjoy the company of my family AND the sun and fresh air, I called out, "Let's go to Slack's Cove!" So we piled in the car and hit the dirt.
45 minutes from my parents house down an increasingly narrow dirt road in a little community called Rockport is Slack's Cove, where, in 1763, 13 Baptists landed "accidentally" from Swansea, Massachusetts, ended up settling, and founding the United Church of Canada. Today, it is nothing more than a beach, but it is still beautiful to climb the rocks, comb the beach, and enjoy the view and the "chocolate" water of the Bay of Fundy. It was hard to get a good shot with the sun so low in the sky, but it was a wonderful afternoon, and protected from the onshore winds, it was perfectly cozy on the beach!
That night, after a dinner of pizza and garlic fingers, we put the kids in their PJs and drove home to Dartmouth, tucking them into their beds fast asleep at around 9 pm. We woke up to another beautiful day Sunday, and despite Scotian's protests (he wanted to bake an apple pie and clean the garage), I talked him into spending the afternoon hiking on the Musquodoboit Trail. It was a lovely afternoon. We were hoping Becky would join us, but Bunny is a marathon napper, so we stopped in for a cup of tea and to negotiate with Becky's husband on some barn beams to construct a sandbox for the kids...we're still negotiating ;)
BananaMuffin and Spunky always enjoy visiting Becky's house. Not only do they both adore Bunny, but they play so well together, and because Becky has much more open space in the country than we do in the city, they can run and play and dig in Becky's gardens. It doesn't hurt she lives only a short walk from a beach!
A wonderful weekend. What more can I say? And to Scotian, I cleaned the garage today, so nothing was lost!Labels: family
