Oskar for Ethiopia
Lisa and I met at an anniversary party for a local architectural firm that she organized. She may not remember, but I do. Years later, she became a customer and we realized that we have a lot of common friends and acquaintances.
Earlier this year, their family adopted a beautiful little girl from Ethiopia. Children often alter our life's course in a way nothing else can (a baby certainly altered mine!), but in this case, the travel, experiences and new addition to their family led their 6-year-old son Oskar to want to help the children left behind in Ethiopia.
The Oskar for Ethiopia project was born, a charitable organization that developed out of Oskar's desire to help. As his mom says: "I am also very proud of my 6 year old son who has a big heart, real dreams and the vision to make his dreams come true. The Oskar for Ethiopia Project is one of his dreams, that he now shares with the whole family, and we hope with you too."
This year, the family organized a family event at a local community center. Neighbourhood children were asked to reflect on their feelings of "selam", or peace and to put those thoughts into beautiful artworks. The artworks were turned into beautifully printed all-occasion greeting cards that are being sold in the community and at the Dartmouth Farmer's Market.
As Lisa says: There is a way to get involved no matter where you live!
I'm happy to say that Nurtured purchased 15 packages of 10 cards, to use as Christmas cards, greeting cards, but more than that, we were so excited to be able to share in the excitement, the genuine desire and the dreams of a little boy in our neighbourhood.
