A Few of My Favourite Things
This weekend, I got lucky. Very lucky. I scored a 100-year-old, 10 foot long pine store counter to grace the Nurtured Store. I'm so excited I can hardly believe it. I've got a collection of antiques, junk and reclaimed "stuff" sitting in the basement and barn at my parent's house, all of it waiting for it's day in the sun. But beyond that, the story of this counter got me thinking about how much cool stuff you can find in rural Nova Scotia, and all of the Maritimes, if only you go looking. This store counter has lived in the shop at Chibby's Ladies Wear on Montague Street in Lunenburg for the last 15 years, but before that, spent all of its life in a jewelry shop in nearby Bridgewater. It is made of pine with some beautiful scroll work. I have some paint stripping, sanding and refinishing ahead of me, but it's going to be gorgeous.
At Chibby's, I found a very eclectic mix of great clothing (also bought myself a wool blazer, and I might even go back for the matching wool skirt), vintage accessories, and funky shawls, scarves and hats by Anna Shoub.
Some of my other favourite Nova Scotia stores are Dayle's in Downtown Amherst, where I have been shopping since I was a little kid and is still my favourite place to buy jeans.
Well Worn & Reborn Uniquities at 9845 Main Street in Canning is a great place to be nostalgic, it reminds me of walking through my grandmother's garage, with 50 years of toys, furniture, kitchen gadgets, records, everything you can imagine.
Last but not least, some of the coolest pottery I've found in the Maritimes recently - that of Suzanne Babineau of Bouctouche, New Brunswick. Her teapot was a Christmas gift to myself after Spunky "accidentally" broke mine. He has a fascination for dropping things and watching them break. It's a dangerous pastime for him!
And while I'm at it, my favourite treats, the place I stop every time I'm on my way to New Brunswick (call ahead first!), Alan's delicious chocolate shop in the Wentworth woods, Appleton Chocolates. Move over Cadbury, this is some serious chocolate! We gave these out as wedding favours and I've been a regular ever since.
Those are a few of my favourite things.
