This is What Happens...
You know when I get stressed, something really odd happens to me. I want to craft. Sew, knit, paint, bead, something. Something to just keep my hands busy and relieve my creative energy. But, lately I have not have time to do any of my favourite hobbies, which leads to something else entirely: buying craft books and magazines. Somehow, this seems to help. I read through the directions of a particular project of interest, imagining HOW I'd do it, the fabric I would use, and all of the details, but it never actually gets done. I'm not really okay with this - I'm the kind of person to whom creativity is intrinsic to who I am, but with two small children and a business expansion underway, I have negative free time. I'm actually planning to go back to school when I'm 65 and the tuition is free (one perk of being a senior citizen, and I will hang out in student cafes with best of them as I work toward my bachelor of Fine Arts in textiles at NSCAD, commuting from my off-grid cabin on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore). Hey, that's my dream.
But I digress. Sometimes, when the stress piles up, you want to be anywhere but here. Or, here, but sitting at my sewing machine.
I'm enjoying the process of getting the store ready, that in itself has been quite creative. I was at Chapters last evening to interview a potential employee and found myself browsing the magazine aisles for my latest crafting fix. I came upon Stitch magazine. Just what the doctor ordered. I'd love to make this skirt, it's very cool. I have the type of figure that does NOT look good in short skirts, but regardless, I love the pleated detailing and I think the lining would look great in a funky retro-inspired Japanese print with some vintage buttons.
There you have it, all of the details, but none of the goods.

I also find myself browsing Anna Maria Horner's blog. She's my favourite fabric designer and I admire her talent for bridging family and work, as well as her design aesthetic. I'm hoping to sew some curtains for the new office of some of her fabric, or I may just read about doing it!
