Happy Birthday, Baby
The first week of the Nurtured store being open has come and gone. It's been a whirlwind of activity, mixed emotion, a fairly steep learning curve, lots and lots of standing (Gillian and I can both attest to very sore feet), lots of wonderful people popping in to say hi and extend their congratulations...it's not unlike giving birth actually. I feel just as exhausted, exhilarated, unprepared, excited, sore, happy and full of adrenaline.
Despite the fact that I have been working for the past three years, I've been working at home. It's quite different getting up in the morning, showering, looking presentable, putting on makeup, getting the kids ready for daycare drop off and catching the bus to work. I'm very happy that Nurtured has taken this huge step, I'm so proud of what Nurtured has become, but it's also been an emotional roller coaster for me as a mother. Scotian and I have been tag-teaming through 16-18 hour work days for the past month getting the store ready, and those long days are most likely to continue for at least the month of April until our stock arrives, the bugs are worked out of the new computer system, the website is updated, and everyone has their routine. This past Friday was Spunky's second birthday. My baby boy turned 2 and I totally missed it. Dropped him off at 8 am and got home after he went to bed. I sang to him at breakfast and had terrible mother guilt the entire day for not being there. He and BananaMuffin slept next to me last night just so I could feel their warmth and listen to them breathing while I slept.
Today we celebrated. My mom, dad, brother, sister (and her belly - I'm going to be an auntie again soon!) and my niece all came to celebrate Spunky's birthday. Scotian made May's delicious french toast recipe and fruit salad, my mom brought a homemade cake, and we drank pots and pots of tea. It was lovely. It was nice to have a down day. The importance of rest can't be underestimated. Happy Birthday, Baby!
One bonus to my mom coming today is that she has managed to straighten out my knitting project. I've been trying to knit a little bag with the rainbow yarn The Wool Fairy dyed for me last year for my birthday. The bag entails nothing more than knitting in the round for 62 rows (with some finishing off stuff that I'm not ready to learn yet), and having completed 30 of those rows, I realized there was a twist in the stitches, so the bag would always be a mobius strip. Not cool. I'm back on track now so I'll have something to do while riding the bus.
The adjustment for all of us has been wonderful and stressful at the same time, I appreciate everyone's understanding during the transition, and I promise the website will get some much needed attention very soon - the snowflakes will be gone shortly :)
