Daycare and Diapers

I get asked a lot about daycare and diapers. My kids both attend daycare, and yes, they both wore/wear cloth diapers during the day. When I first started Nurtured, BananaMuffin was 6 months old and because the business was very new, I did go back to work. BananaMuffin went to daycare three days a week at 12 months old, and we asked timidly if the daycare would accept cloth diapers. We were lucky that the daycare providers were very receptive, and told us that as long as we brought sealable/closeable waterproof bags, they could contain the dirty diapers, but they would not be able to rinse the diapers in the toilet in the event of a bowel movement. That was fine by me.

At the time I was using Mother Ease Sandy's fitted diapers and Air Flow covers, so in the morning I would place a flushable bioliner in each one, pack the cleans into a blue medium Bummis tote bag and leave them a medium red tote for the dirties. At the end of the day, I would pick up the red bag, flush the bioliners, and wash the diapers as usual.

6 months later I left work to have Spunky, and was at home for nearly two years, though the kids both started back at daycare on a part-time basis last Summer and now go full time. They attend a different daycare now, and again, when I asked if they would accept cloth diapers, they said it made absolutely no difference to them, and in fact, there were three kids in Spunky's class in cloth diapers.

Normally, when approaching a new day care, I suggest making an enquiry as to whether they would accept cloth diapers. Telling the director you're quite willing to use disposables, but wondered if they could try it for a week before they refuse outright, usually goes a long way to smoothing things over and helps to not single you out as a difficult or demanding parent. Most often, the daycares are willing to keep going with cloth once they have begun for a week.

By now, most daycares in the Halifax area have seen at least one child using cloth diapers. Some in-home daycares are a little more resistant, and generally it is perceived as very time consuming to deal with and may take a little more information on the part of the parent to show just how easy it is.

Daycares and cloth: it can be done!
