Getting Hippie With It

This week, I finally took Spunky for a visit to our good personal friend and family naturopath Dr. Jennifer Salib-Huber, ND. For longer than I want to admit, Spunky has had a constant, clear running nose and a wet cough. For months I rationalized it: he has a big sister, lots of germs around, he's in daycare, lots of germs around...but this week, after a weekend away at the cottage, I noticed that his face was also becoming blotchy. It was time.

Dr. Salib-Huber checked him over, and suggested that most likely he has a food allergy. With a list of what not to eat (wheat, dairy, corn, food additives, citrus), I realized: our diet has really gone downhill and I NEED groceries.

Today we went off to the grocery store, and didn't get any further than the organic section at Superstore. $140 later, I now have at least the 'snack' portion of Spunky's new diet - trying to find substitutions for the regular snack foods he would eat at daycare: yogurt, cheese, bread, milk.

I have been thinking about our diet lately, specifically that we'd fallen off the wagon pretty hard. After Christmas we gave up dairy, wheat and sugar, but lately I've been eating most of my meals on the run - or not eating them at all - and I'm definitely feeling it. Time to get back on track.

I've also been thinking a lot about granola. Strange but true. I've been buying boxed granola cereal, but I've been thinking it would be much more effective to just make my own in bulk, so I went searching and came up with Granola From My Mom's Hippie Youth. What could be better than tried-and-true hippie granola? I'm off to Bulk Barn shortly to get the rest of what I need.

The other thing that made me really excited was to find Amy Karol's recipe for homemade deoderant. You know you've got your hippie on when...

I've been on the hunt for a great deoderant/antipersperant alternative for a really, really long time. I don't love the stuff in my usual brand, but all of the alternative products I've tried haven't done the trick for me. And because of Anointment, I happen to have all of the ingredients on hand - though I am not personally such a fan of ylang-ylang, but I can think of some other really delicious essential oils I have on hand. I will give it a try and will let you know how it goes.

Getting earthier by the day :)

And then there's this organic baby diaper shirt that makes me laugh out loud every single time I look at it. Coming soon to a Nurtured store near you!

Post script note: The granola was delicious, and because my son cannot eat wheat, we substituted wheat germ for flax seeds. We also found that there is far too much honey, you could easily cut the honey content in half and still have wonderful granola.

I'd love to hear some of your favourite granola recipes, we can have a granola bake off! Does anyone remember that show "Just Like Mom"? I used to love that show...
