Hippie Updates

Over the past two or three Sundays, I've been working on perfecting my granola recipe. This is now my favourite breakfast cereal, and the original "hippie" recipe was delicious, but far too honey-y and sticky to use as cereal - more appropriate for granola bars.

I also wanted to make something Spunky could take for snacks at daycare, since so much of the snack repetoire consists of wheat-wheat-dairy. While they adhere to Canada's Food Guide, there's not a lot of variety in the grain department. So, with some consultation from Scotian, here is our new and improved MacKinnon Breakfast Granola...

2 c. organic rolled oats (I like Speerville from New Brunswick)
1 c. pumpkin seeds
1/4 c. sesame seeds
1/2 c. toasted sunflower seeds
1/2 c. unsweetened coconut
1/4 c. flax seeds
1/2 c. organic raisins
1/2 c. dried cranberries
1/8 c. light-tasting cooking oil
1/8 c. maple syrup

Mix all ingredients, bake on a cookie sheet or baking dish, 300 F for 30 minutes. Stir partway through. Store in a glass or stainless steel canister, enjoy for breakfast or by the handful.

I also made a small batch of tantra (orange, patchouli and ylang ylang) scented homemade deoderant, and applied it before I set to work removing soap from their molds (this can be pretty physically intensive so I got a bit of a work out.) So far so good. Scotian likes the scent, it's neutral enough that we could both try it, and it goes on fairly dry. I'll give it a fair test this week, though it will be better once the sun comes back out.

As an aside, the soaps are in production and most of them are curing as we speak. Om Shanti, Lavender, Seaweed, Tea Tree, Oatmeal & Honey, Scrub, Calendula and Peppermint are curing and will be ready near the beginning of July. The minimum curing time is 3 weeks, and I don't want to rush them along, but I am looking forward to a new, fresh batch of delicious soaps.

Coming along soon are also a witch hazel-based post-partum perineal cream, and a peppermint foot rub! Gillian is also helping out with beautiful new product photography and we hope to have a new Anointment website up and running soon!
