Wentworth's Chocolate Gem
There are things I really love about Atlantic Canada - and I'm sure other regions are similar, but I'm not as familiar. The way corner stores, especially in small towns, really remain the hub of a community. The way you find unexpected treasures tucked along country roads. The way my father taught me to never arrive and leave a destination via the same route - you get to explore more this way.
One of my favourite things, as you may have noticed, is chocolate. Now, I am trying to improve my diet, but Christmas is coming and treats are still acceptable, within reason. On my way to visit my parents this weekend, I decided to make a stop at one of those unknown treasures: Appleton Chocolates. Tucked in the woods three kilometers down Appleton Road, off of the old Wentworth Highway, sits this little house. The sun streams in the front window, and when you walk through the front door, the aroma of chocolates greets you. Their story is a familiar one: a business that started in their kitchen and grew and grew and grew.
I have been to this little tiny chocolate "factory" twice now: once last winter and this past weekend, but my relationship with Appleton goes back to my wedding in 2003 and it is my usual destination for Christmas treats (they have worldwide mail order service as well). My personal favourite is the dark chocolate maple rum, but the chocolates are all wonderful, their signature being maple blueberry - what's more Nova Scotian than that?
For anyone who is a chocolate lover, this is the best, and short of the chocolate being Belgian, it doesn't get more local than this. Alan, the owner, and his team of chocolatiers, hand dip each one of these chocolates, and for visitors, they are usually generous with samples.
