Doll Quilt

With one last push until Christmas, and at the mercy of Canada Post, I finished my one and only handmade gift this year: a doll quilt for my niece. When my sister had her second baby this past June, I made a Waldorf doll for my niece so she would have a special friend during a time of transition. What I didn't realize is that my niece absolutely loves dolls, and has LEGIONS of them, which she arranges carefully on the couch and teaches or leads in sing-song. So, to encourage a little quiet, I decided to make her a doll quilt, so she could tuck one or two in for a little nap.

Using scraps of fabric, I pieced the top together and then hand-appliqued the little bird. I didn't have any quilt batting on hand, so I used some organic hemp fleece, which is lofty enough, and so incredibly soft, I actually like it much more than traditional quilt batting! I then machine quilted the whole sandwich in random linear intervals, curving around the bird. I really like how it turned out, it looks even better on the back. In my excitement, I announced to Scotian that I had invented a new quilting technique, but I suspect it's already been invented under the term "flying by the seat of your pants".

Cutting the binding was the most difficult of the whole procedure, and I'm afraid I didn't do as great a job as I would have liked, but I hope that my niece will like it, and that it will experience lots of cuddles over the next few years.

It's a great lead-in project to a grown-up quilt I'm working on - for which I have now FINALLY finished cutting out all of the pieces!

My doll quilt was posted this past Monday, hopefully making it to New Brunswick in time for Christmas morning.

Merry Christmas Everyone!
