Odds and Ends
I've been meaning to post for about 10 days now, but the events of last week (namely, a car accident involving the kids and I - no one was seriously injured, but it left me with a sore back and neck and quite shaken) left me away from the store, and administrating new vehicle arrangements, medical appointments and making sure the store remains well stocked before Christmas.
Before I go on, I have to post a link to the Wool Fairy's blog. You HAVE to see the advent calendar she made for her boys. It's beautiful. Also check out Jessica B's version of a similar advent calendar idea hanging on our store Christmas tree - she did a lovely job!
The Christmas season is in full swing, starting with a trip to visit my mom and dad. Two weekends ago. I found some time to do one of my favourite things: Frenchy's shopping. If you live outside of Atlantic Canada, Frenchy's is our chain of thrift stores. And it's awesome. It seems my kids have both had fall growth spurts, and while I found a whole new wardrobe for Spunky, clothing a 4-5 year old is much harder...my sister concurred it's harder to find clothing the larger the sizes get.
I came across some great finds for Gillian, who is experiencing incredible success this season with her Pip Robins line of cowls. I also came across this: An untagged outfit, made of silk and lace, covered in sequins and beads, appearing to be about 2T in size. Completely impractical and possibly inappropriate for a toddler, but I thought it might be reinvented into something else. My mom has a tattered copy of McCall's Treasury of Needlecraft from the 1950s, and while I wasn't specifically looking for a needlecraft project, I thought a clutch like this might work - suggestions anyone?
I'm also working on a number of things I'm itching to blog about, but can't, because they're Christmas surprises. We drew names among the ladies at Nurtured for a Secret Santa gift exchange, which will be culminating at a potluck I'm hosting this Saturday evening. The pressure is intense, let me tell you! These are among the craftiest, most talented people I know. It took me a long time to figure out what to do, but now that I've got it, I've been working hard to get it completed. It feels good to go back to my very favourite hobby - before sewing or painting or anything that I've passed time with in my life, but I don't want to spoil the surprise - next week, I promise!
This past weekend was also the annual Christmas Fair at the South Shore Waldorf School in Blockhouse. For the third year in a row, the Wool Fairy and her family have gathered with mine to kick off the holiday season. The kids had fun, I picked up a couple of really cute little crafts to fill the pockets of my advent calendar (an ongoing hunt), and then we enjoyed the afternoon in Mahone Bay, having lunch, taking in the Father Christmas festival, and of course, Geocaching. BananaMuffin is growing up, I know this for sure as this year, she discovered that the giant Christmas elf, pictured above, was actually a person dressed up in a costume, so she wasn't afraid. Already the mysteries of childhood are slipping away from us!
