The Nurtured Girls
Spring is certainly in the air this weekend with all the sunshine we've seen. It's promising, uplifting. Making me cheerful, even.
Saturday began with a ninety-minute yoga class followed by a trip to the bank, which was, unsurprisingly, very anti-climactic.
Saturday afternoon found me back at Nurtured, at my desk, madly trying to complete orders for stock - no matter how often I order stock or how complete I think I've got it, I always miss something. It's probably my biggest downfall as a manager and my biggest pet peeve - and a habit and I can't seem to kick, though I'm trying!
We had a quick staff meeting last night, followed by a group photo of the gals:

Jeremy, co-owner of Padraig Cottage and one of my favourite suppliers (we often chat for a good hour when I call to place an order. They've been in business over 30 years and are incredibly successful yet are so accessible and friendly, I absolutely love the relationship I've built with them) sent me an email last week asking for a photo of the Nurtured staff for the new Padraig website. It's something that's been on my mind lately too, so what better time to do it. Unfortunately, there is a person missing (Jessica B.), but this is 6/7ths of us.
So here's my opportunity to introduce everyone, from left to right.
Gillian is the Assistant Manager and Online Operations Manager. Translation: she is my right hand woman and keeps the website up to date. Her biggest pet peeve is finding a product on our website with an incorrect stock level. She's a very driven woman, mom to a very adorable little boy, and owner of the successful Etsy business, Pip Robins, which was recently featured on the uber-popular blog Dooce.com. Gillian is a world-traveler, extremely well read on a variety of parenting topics, loves tattoos, and is one of the most interesting people I've met. Gillian is in the shop Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Simone joined us only three weeks ago, hails from the capital of Australia (which is NOT Sydney, as I incorrectly informed someone recently) and is mom to a 9-month old boy. You'll see her in the shop on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. She is responsible for all of the mail orders: packing, shipping, tracking, and related customer service. With a background in media, she is also full of great ideas on marketing and promotion.
Jessica H. is a stay-at-home mom to a two-year-old daughter by day, knitter extraordinaire by night and Nurtured staff on Saturday. She routinely bakes her own bread, has a beautiful flower garden, and is currently cooking up a little boy due in April. She'll be leaving us soon, and will be missed, but perhaps one day she'll join us again.
Jessika is a super-woman, as far as I can tell. A combination of stay-at-home mom, work-at-home mom, and working mom, there is nothing that she can't do! She joined us in January to help on Saturdays and to transition into Jessica H.'s position when she leaves to have her baby. Jessika is also responsible for the design and implementation of our window displays, in-store merchandising, and is in charge of marketing and promotion. She is also the owner of her own Etsy store Say O Happy Day. Jessika is mom to two daughters aged 5 and 11 months.
April, that would be me. I'm the owner of Nurtured and Anointment Natural Skin Care. I have two children, a daughter, age 4 and a son, age 3. I am perpetually working on something and have an inability to sit still. I'm a former (or reformed) Civil Engineer and have been working on Nurtured since 2006.
Karen is mom to a two year old daughter and is a self-proclaimed "doggist". She has several show dogs and loves the show circuit. She has a background in linguistics and her love and interest in language is evident in the way she speaks - in a combination of English, French, German, and possibly Esperanto. During the week she operates a small daycare from her home and joins us in the shop on Saturdays. Karen is incredibly intelligent, a pragmatic problem-solver and has a wicked sense of humour. Karen is responsible for our production of Organic Cotton Sherpa Wipes.
Jessica B. (missing from the photo) is mom to a two year old daughter and is a screen-printing artist. You will find Jessica at Nurtured on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. She has an amazing collection of colourful tights, has a subtle yet surprising sense of humour, and is prone to consuming an amazing amount of coffee before noon! Jessica loves to iron seams to perfection and has a great talent for wrapping gifts.
This is just a snap shot of the amazing team I have the pleasure of working with every day! Out of the seven women I just mention, at least 5 of us have very strong Type A personalities, and it never ceases to amaze me how well we get along, the supportive nature of these women. It is often said that many women in a workplace make for catty behaviour, and I can honestly say that office politics DO NOT exist at Nurtured, it's an atmosphere I am so proud of.
I can't thank these girls enough for all the dedication they show to Nurtured every single day.
