April

April is getting away on me. Blogging seems to be slipping again, though I don't intend it to. There's always a lot going on, I suppose. The month began with my "baby" turning 3. I no longer have babies or even toddlers in my life, I have pre-schoolers. And while the last year has been tumultuous for us as a family, and indecisive for me, we've decided that our family is complete. As much as I would love to have a large family, the reality is that two children is perfect for us. Now that the decision has been made, I feel able to move forward with other things instead of my mind constantly wondering, month after month, if the timing would work for another baby.

Spunky's third birthday party was held at my mom and dad's house. We hadn't visited since well before Christmas, and it was time, despite the fact that Spring comes much later to the Tantramar Marshes than it does in Halifax. But, the sun was shining, the wind was blowing (as it always is), and the kids had a wonderful time learning about life in the country. My brother lives about a kilometer from my parents, and has always been really wonderful with children, and loves my kids as though they are his own. He spent some time teaching the kids how to drive a farm tractor - something I've never even done, but they enjoyed it immensely!

The party itself was small: our family, my parents, and my brother. My sister and her family were invited, but sickness kept them home-bound. Spunky's cake was a gluten-free and dairy-free home-baked vanilla cake from Carol Fenster's Wheat-Free Recipes and Menus, which has changed our lives! We now make our own gluten-free breads, doughs, and with the exception of cheese, I'm now okay with a gluten-free, dairy-free household, as it's obvious now that Spunky is not going to outgrow this particular sensitivity any time soon.

Spunky received only one gift from us, a Fagus Fire Truck. Oh my goodness does he love it. He plays with it constantly. It's such a good size, and has so many interesting features (ladders that fully extend, steerable tires), even my dad and my brother were ooing and ahhing over the quality of the truck!

To go with the fire truck, of course mama needed to make a birthday crown! The week leading up to his birthday was total insanity here, so I literally cut out the wool felt and sewed the band as I was loading the car and walking out the door. Then, I grabbed by tin of sewing needles, thread, and scissors and parked them in the cup holder. By the time the two hour drive was complete, the crown was done (whew!) Half-way though the drive, Spunky asked me what I was making, I told him I was making him a birthday present, and he beamed from ear to ear. That boy knows how to melt a girl's heart! The fire truck crown is getting lots of use, whether he's playing fire truck or not!

This particular picture was taking as the kids were playing dress up, including Lyra makeup pencils. Wow do the kids ever have fun with these! BananaMuffin prefers to paint herself as a kitty, and Spunky just draws randomly on his face.

The following week, Gillian celebrated her birthday, and while I was a little bit late, I had a special gift in mind for her.

Taken from my new most coveted book Alabama Stitch Book by Natalie Chanin, I deconstructed a T-Shirt from Value Village into a fitted corset-style tank top. I LOVE corset style anything - it's flattering regardless of your shape. I love how this turned out! I sewed the seams so that they are reversed - the seams show to the front - and stitched them with a contrasting thread. It's a little edgy, a little funky, a little feminine. I think it suits Gillian perfectly, though I haven't seen it on her yet...I loved it so much I'm making a second one for myself in beige organic cotton with cranberry stitching. I can't ever just make one of something, it seems!
