Mother's Day Contest
As the store was getting ready to open at this time last year, I met Fred Connors, owner of FRED, a salon, cafe (with the BEST cupcakes in all of Halifax, I might add), and art gallery. He popped in to the store late one Friday night as we were bolstering the "team", our first Friday night, with hugs all around for making it through the first week of being opened. It was raining, he tethered his two tiny dogs to the tree outside and came in to congratulate us on our opening, introduce himself, and detailed his involvement in the local business community. Since then, I've found Fred himself to be very intriguing, accomplished, and driven. Most of the gals at Nurtured now have their hair cut at his salon, and I'm a frequent patron of the cafe as well. Given Fred's background as a motivator, it dawned on me that it might be a great idea to collaborate with him on a Mother's Day contest. What mom wouldn't love a makeover? I know I would!
One of the biggest things I've found, both through talking with the staff at Nurtured and through my own experience, is that moms often put their babies and children first at the expense of their own self-care. Now, of course, children require a LOT of attention, stimulation, and we all want our children to grow up to be confident and successful adults. But from my own experience, I gave up sleep, most of my daily beauty/grooming routine, good nutrition, and for a while, my identity as a creative woman for my children. So often we hear that a happy and healthy mother is a better mother, and my own experience has taught me that. We all deserve to continue self-development as adults, even while caring for a young child.
When I approached Fred, the timing was perfect as he has just launched a new beauty product line and was eager to offer his services. So, together we've launched the Moms Are Beautiful contest, and we're asking moms with a child or children of any age to share with us their strategies for every day self-care. We're getting some wonderful responses, which we will post here after the contest has closed.
